Villages near Moraira

There are a lot of nice villages to be found near Moraira. On the coast, the villages are often quite touristic. Although, in the old centres you often still find relative peace. In any case, they are worth visiting and, in addition to often a modern boulevard, they have many sights worth visiting. Indicating a favourite is difficult. They are too different for that. All these villages near Moraira have their own charm. In case of shopping, keep in mind that many stores are closed during siesta time.

Altea

South of Moraira lies Altea. Altea consists primarily of urbanizations, but the old town is worth visiting. The old centre is not on the coast but a bit uphill. You can park at the top, but the streets there are narrow and steep. It is easier to park down along the coastal road (there are also some parking lots) and walk up. It’s a bit of a climb, but the view is spectacular. The houses here are white, dating back to Moorish times, and generally beautifully maintained. Eventually, you arrive at the square near Nuestra Señora del Consuelo. Due to its high location, this church can be seen from miles around at night. And is beautiful from the inside as well from the outside. There are several good restaurants with terraces on the large, attractive square surrounding the church. Altea’s coastline is not particularly interesting. It is a result of the rise of mass tourism, which has resulted in less attractive buildings. The promenade isn’t much better, though there are a few excellent restaurants.

Dénia

Dénia is probably best known for the Roman Castillo de Dénia. Completed in the 12th century, this castle is well worth a visit. With the (paid) ticket, you can access the Palau del Governador, including the museum. Just be sure to pay attention. Especially on a hot day, it’s a strenuous climb, and admission times vary almost monthly. No fun undertaking a hot trek up the hill for nothing. Once at the top, you have a beautiful view! Also worth seeing in Dénia are the Placa de la Constitution, the Carre del Marqués de Campo (boutiques and terraces), and the Carre del Marqués de Campo.
Do you want to shop extensively, without siesta on a rare, rainy day or just escape the heat for a while? Then the Portal de la Marina in Ondara near Dénia is a sheltered option. All the well-known chains, a large Carrefour, a cinema, and many shoe stores can be found there. There are also several catering establishments.
The port of Dénia has several functions. It is a marina, a fish auction, and the departure point of ferries to the Balearic Islands. In the summer months, it is possible to do a day (or night!) Ibiza or Formentera with the fast ferry!

Javea

Javea or Xabia has several faces. On the south side of Javea is a large sandy beach with a broad, modern boulevard. On the boulevard, you will find several restaurants and boutiques. The old Center of Javea is not located directly on the coast but about a kilometre inland. You can enjoy wandering around the narrow, historic alleys located around the originally 14th-century Iglesia de San Bartolomé. A circular walk is signposted along all the historic sites. You can get fresh products every day (except during siesta) at the covered market, the Abastos Municipal Market, and there are friendly and cheap tapas bars everywhere in between. There are excellent seafood restaurants near Javea’s port; fresher fish cannot be found. Chiringuitos can be found on the quieter beach north of the port. Simple beach bars where you can drink and eat surprisingly delicious food regularly. On a warm summer evening, it’s lovely to take in the scenery and atmosphere!

Villajoyosa

As if a piece of the Caribbean had come to Spain. Or maybe it’s the other way around. Villa Joyosa, in addition to a beautiful, relatively quiet, long, and wide sandy beach, has some beautifully coloured old fishermen’s houses. The story goes that the cottages were painted in these striking colours because it gave fishermen at sea a better point of orientation. Whatever the reason, it is a beautiful picture. Here you can make your own postcard in no time. Villajoyosa, or, in Valencian: Villajoiosa, also has a lovely historic centre. When you want to see the beach and the houses, the easiest way to park is in the parking lot on Calle de Arsenal.
