Admire the almond blossoms, and rastro in the Jalon Valley
The Jalon Valley
This beautiful green valley, just 15 kilometres from the coast, is an area of vineyards, olive, citrus, and almond trees sandwiched between several mountain ranges. The Rio Jalón, or Xaló, meanders right through it. The influence of the Moors can still be clearly seen in the many small villages. The Jalon Valley is ideal for a beautiful tour by car, especially in February or March when the almonds start to bloom. But also in other months, the Jalon Valley is worth visiting.
Rastro in Jalon
Every Saturday, there is a rastro in Jalon, a combination of antiques, fleas, and goods markets. Undoubtedly the largest in this region, you will find almost two kilometres of stalls here. There is a lot of old stuff and many things aimed at tourists, but here and there, you can still find something unique. Some people find the rastro of Jalon too touristic, but let’s be honest, so are all the markets in the area, and then this is an excellent choice.
Wine from the Jalon Valley
Nothing is more excellent than drinking wine from the area where you are staying. Because the summers are hot and long, there is a perfect wine from the region to be found in the Jalon Valley. The local wine cooperative Bodegas Xaló, representing 400 local growers, sells high-quality red and rosé wine, white wine, and dessert wine. All of good quality and attractively priced. Because the cooperative is directly across the street from the market, a wine tasting can be combined with a visit to the rastro.
Almond Blossom route Jalon
The almond trees in the Jalon Valley bloom from about February to mid-March (there is no bud on them, so it remains dependent on the weather, but in the middle of this period, you are always right). Driving the almond blossom route is a must if you are in the area during this period. You leave the main road from Benissa, taking the back roads through Jalon, Alcalali, Mula, and Orba. Via the C-3318, you reach Parcent at the foot of the Coll de Rates. Up here via the Coll, and you have breathtaking views. The terraced almond orchards here extend toward the sea. From here toward Taberna is also a sea of blossoms. The descent is also beautiful to see, and up to Tarbena, the tour goes through the vast fields of blossoms. You return to Benissa and Moraira after passing Polop and La Nucia. If you drive the almond blossom route, remember that it can be a lot colder in the higher mountains than down on the coast.
